Getting to Greenville
This article is intended to be expanded, please leave helpful comments below!
Greenville!
We, in the UK, have been meeting interesting and friendly people from a place called Greenville. They keep visiting us here, again and again. Trey Pennington and Olivier Blanchard, in particular, have presented at events in the UK, more than once. Much credit is due to the expertise and efforts of Scott Gould and Drew Ellis in organising the Like Minds events.
We hear that Greenville is a wonderful place, and we’ve found it on the map.

No, Postman Pat fans, this is not Greendale! This is Greenville, South Carolina, and it is not to be confused with any of the many other Greenvilles!
Maybe one day we’ll get to Greenville ourselves … after all, Greenville has been getting to us!
Why go?
People from Greenville, especially our friend Trey Pennington, have been generous with their attention and trust in building relationships with people in the UK. Many of us feel the urge to return the complement.
When to go?
Any time would probably be good … provided, of course, that certain people are around! However, it would surely be better to be there when something specific is happening?
In 2010, the Bright Minds Together event, organised by Trey, is on September 24; so this is a possible focus of a visit.
For each of us, the timing is likely to be strongly influenced by the timing and location of any other events, activities and visits that we’d like to include on the same trip.
How to go?
We could try walking from the UK, but there are probably easier ways which involve flights!
We have heard about Trey’s flight experiences, some good and some not so good, when travelling to and from that part of the world.
On flight routes: I am thinking that possible routes from London include:
- direct
- via New York
- via Atlanta
Please suggest other likely routes.

Anyone interested in getting to Greenville (and back again!) can benefit from information, suggestions, questions and thoughts that you are able to pass on. So all helpful comments are welcome.
Although this article is primarily intended as a guide for people based in the UK, it may be of interest to anyone, and can certainly benefit from useful information from everyone!
The purpose of this article is to provide a place to attract information which helps and encourages individuals from the UK and elsewhere to organize trips to Greenville. I intend to expand the content above with helpful information received from “y’all”!

On the subject of flights, what direct flights are available?
It seems that the only airline that flies from London to Greenville is US Airways. They fly from Gatwick airport (LGW), London to Spartanburg airport (GSP), Greenville, South Carolina with at least one stop (in Charlotte, North Carolina).
This seems to be the most obvious route. However, there are other options.
Please pass on any other information that you might have on flights or on other topics related to recommended places to stay, other events worth considering and so on.
John
Thank you John. I’d love to have y’all come over for a visit.
We’re working on getting everything ready to put on the web for our 24 September event in Greenville. As soon as tickets are available, I’ll let you know how folks from the UK can get complimentary tickets.
One development since the last time I spoke with you: I’m working on something called the Social Story Conference. The first one is in Denver, Colorado on 24 August. Based upon the feedback I’m getting from that event and after talking with Scott Gould at length this past weekend, it seems to make sense to do the Social Story Conference in Greenville on 24 September.
We should have the website up for Social Story Greenville this weekend.
Stay tuned…
Thank you very much for your ongoing encouragement.
That’s great, Trey! Several people in the UK have expressed initial interest, tempered with the usual concerns.
We all have different objectives and resources available, of course; but sometimes the difficulties are not as great as they may seem. My challenge is to juggle limited resources and also a training event planned in that week.
So, on the basis that “knowledge” is the first step (“procedures” and “practice” being the other two, but that is another story!), this page might help to provide people with some useful information on which to base their thinking.
Yes, you have a superb subject area for the Social Story Conference in Denver! If you are considering holding a Social Story Conference in Greenville, then that makes a trip to Greenville even more attractive.
Thanks for your generous suggestion of complementary tickets! How can we resist your hospitality now?
Thank you, Trey, in advance, for whatever you may be able to offer.
Looking forward to reading more as it becomes available.
John: its such as small world. Ann Holman I have never met but read her blog and obviously didnt understand her post or we have diametrically opposed views on customer equality.
@trey has introduced me around Greenville and I will become a resident in 2011! You need to find time to make it there. We are house hunting. I’ve attached a google map with some personal landmarks.
Do you follow the #custserv chat? its a little late. surmise 0200 Wednesday morning. adding you to my google reader blogroll. cheers.
